A devastating tragedy unfolded in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as a military aircraft crashed into a school building, killing 27 people, including 25 children. The disaster, which occurred in broad daylight, has prompted a nationwide day of mourning and raised serious concerns about air safety near urban areas.
What Happened in Dhaka?
At approximately 1:06 PM local time on July 22, a Bangladesh Air Force Chengdu F-7BGI fighter jet took off from Kurmitola Air Base for a routine training mission, reports BBC. According to military officials, shortly after departure, the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure.
Despite the pilot’s attempt to divert the plane away from populated areas, the jet crashed directly into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone School and College, located in Dhaka’s Diabari district, approximately 10 kilometers from the base.
The impact caused a massive explosion, sending debris and smoke into the air and creating a large hole in the side of the school building.
Casualties and Injuries
The crash resulted in the confirmed deaths of 27 people:
- 25 children
- One teacher
- The pilot
Additionally, over 100 people sustained injuries, many of them children suffering from severe burns. At least 78 victims remain hospitalized, according to Dhaka’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Aircraft Details
The crashed aircraft was identified as an F-7BGI, the most advanced version of China’s Chengdu J-7 series, itself based on the Soviet-era MiG-21. Bangladesh acquired 16 of these aircraft between 2011 and 2013 as part of a modernization program for its air force.
Government and Military Response
Authorities have launched an official investigation into the cause of the crash. Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim government leader, confirmed that a high-level inquiry committee has been formed. He emphasized that the government would “take all necessary steps” to determine the cause of the disaster and to support the victims’ families.
“Hospitals and emergency services have been instructed to prioritize treatment and support for those affected,” Yunus stated.
The Bangladesh Air Force also announced its cooperation with civilian authorities to ensure a transparent investigation.
Scene of the Crash: Eyewitness Reports

Images and videos from the site showed the jet’s wreckage embedded in the side of the school building, with iron structures mangled and classrooms destroyed. Rescue workers, firefighters, and ambulances rushed to the scene, battling the blaze and evacuating victims from the rubble.
Nine fire engines and six ambulances were deployed. Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick smoke rising from the site. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as injured children were carried away from the burning building.
National Mourning Declared
In response to the tragedy, the Bangladeshi government has declared a national day of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and prayers held across the country.
